April Works: Backpacks, Bombs and Borders

By Jagath Weerasinghe

At Saskia Fernando Gallery

ends on June 18

‘April Works: Backpacks, Bombs & Borders’ by Jagath Weerasinghe. In these series, created between April/May 2019, Weerasinghe responds to the Easter attacks that occurred in Sri Lanka. In Los Angeles during this time, Weerasinghe began a smaller series of work on paper and installation in response to news of the attacks, and later continued the series during his residency at Davidson College, North Carolina where he created works on butcher paper. The artist draws parallels between mundane objects/materials and violence; an evolution of this form of narrative and hidden ironies are continuously present in his work. Using the self to narrate the political concepts in his works he writes love letters to emphasise the harsh reality behind the themes of violence, corruption, sexuality and borders.

Tech Dissect

Sunday June 7, 4 pm to 5.30 pm

Guest hosted by Object blue – Join Facebook Event

Responding to the needs of our community of womxn music makers and creators during this time of social distancing, Saffron wants to bring people together to encourage, support and inspire each other. All skill-levels are welcome, but some experience with music production is advised. If you just want to join in to elevate your active listening skills and meet other womxn producers then that’s ok, you don’t have to share your own music in the sessions.

In this session, object blue will discuss how important editing/curating is in production, exploring how she decides which sound/section makes the cut into the final version of a track. She will open up her own Ableton files to show how/why she chooses particular sounds to go in particular places. Additionally, object blue will feedback on participants’ music, partly to help with WIP (works in progress) but also to discuss how feedbacks may or may not be necessary for your workflow!
