
Dr. P. Nandalal Weerasinghe was re-appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank for a further term of six years from July 4.
Dr. Weerasinghe assumed duties as the 17th Governor of the Central Bank in early April this year.
However, Economic growth rate for the first quarter of 2022 has been estimated as negative 1.6 percent, a significant contraction of the economy compared to the first quarter of 2021, according to the Census Department.
The gradual recovery of the economy this year from the global pandemic was hampered again by the economic crisis triggered by an acute shortage of forex to import essentials such as fuel, food, fertiliser and medicine.
The economy has been estimated to record a negative growth rate this year as the economic crisis is said to worsen in the coming g months according to lawmakers.
