The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL), the pioneering organisation committed to promote environmental sustainability in Sri Lanka designed and developed the ‘Greening Sri Lanka 2001/30’ campaign as its roadmap for achieving environmental sustainability and sustainable development in the country.
The aim of the campaign is to facilitate sustainability based economic development in the country by providing home-grown and cost-effective green solutions to make built environments sustainable, while ensuring enhancement of quality, efficiency, productivity and profitability in all development activities and business performances in line with national and internationally accepted norms and standards.
This is the largest campaign launched in Sri Lanka to ensure the best environmental performance of built environment including cities, transport infrastructure, commercial, industrial and residential buildings and irrigation infrastructure with the aim to achieve projected goals of sustainable development y 2030, GBCSL Chairman Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake said addressing the media on the launch of the ‘National Green Expo 2022’ from May 27-29 at the BMICH.
The exhibition is aimed at showcasing the achievements of green technological innovations made so far by all sectors of the economy such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing, infrastructure development and transport.
The other objective of the event is to build awareness of the benefits of using products that have been upgraded by integrating green technology. The exhibition will be a great opportunity for the public and corporate sector to show their commitment to promote green, while introducing their upgraded products and services to the public, Prof. Dissanayake said.
Green Building Councils across countries in the Asia Pacific region have agreed to collaborate with GBCSL to conduct the exhibition by offering technical and technological support and arranging leading industries in their counties to participate in the event as exhibitors.
GBCSL is a member of the World Green Building Council which represents a large number of countries ranging from developed to developing nations worldwide.
The World GBC supports its member Green Building Councils and their member companies in individual countries and across regions, to pursue green buildings that are best suited to their own markets. The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL) is Sri Lanka’s leading authority on implementing green concept and green building practices.
GBCSL is a consensus-based not for profit organisation with diverse and integrated representation from all sectors of the property industry and academia. GBCSL was established in 2009 with a joint effort by the professional institutions of architects, engineers, structural engineers, town planners, quantity surveyors, university academics, construction industry leaders, environmentalists and business leaders.
The aim of GBCSL is to transform the Sri Lankan construction industry with green building practices and to fully adopt sustainability as the means by which our environment thrives, economy prospers and society grows to ensure the future wellbeing of our motherland. A ‘green’ building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment. Green buildings preserve natural resources and help improve the quality of life of inhabitors.
Efficient use of energy, water and other resources, use of renewable energy, such as solar energy, pollution and waste reduction measures, and the enabling of re-use and recycling, good indoor environmental air quality, use of materials that are non-toxic, ethical and sustainable, consideration of the environment in design, construction and operation and consideration of the quality of life of occupants in design, construction and operation are some of the factors which make a building ‘green’.
