The Board of Investment’s (BOI’s) Horana Export Processing Zone (EPZ) recorded US$ 31.8 million (Rs.5,796.7 mn) in export revenue as at the end of last year. The Zone is in the Kalutara district of the Western Province.
The Horana EPZ was set up in 1999 on 395 acres of which 178 acres comprises factory buildings. The infrastructure facilities at the zone include water, the processing of waste water and electricity, making it attractive to investors. The zone’s enterprises have a significant impact on the local economy as they provide employment to 2,428 people.
There are 21 enterprises in operation at the Horana EPZ, manufacturing apparel and accessories, food, wooden, consumer, steel and aluminum, paper and plastic products. Among the leading enterprises at the Horana EPZ are Unilever Sri Lanka Ltd., which manufactures consumer products such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste, Nature Rub Export Intl. (Pvt) Ltd (apparel accessories including yarn and lace), and Eco Spindles (Pvt) Ltd (yarn - by recycling plastic bottles).
