Construction industry faces worker shortage

There is a dearth of manpower in the construction industry and the government is contemplating attracting foreign workers to fill the gap, Acting Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told guests at the launch of ‘Construction Expo 2017’.

The construction industry has become a key sector in the economy and has changed dimensions due to environment factors. The contribution to the GDP by the construction industry is a vital component in the growth of the economy. In 2014, it was 7.2 percent, in 2015 it was 6.8 and in 2016 Q3 it was 6.9 percent, he said.

The exhibition to be held on June 2, 3 and 4, at the BMICH, Colombo will be on the theme ‘Towards a green Sri Lanka’ and feature all aspects related to the construction and building industry.

Reflecting on the importance of social responsibility of living, promoting the green building will be the key focus of this year’s exhibition.

“This event showcases products and services that helps participants to interact with all the stakeholders and key service providers within the building and construction industry,” Chairman, Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB), Dr. Rohan Karunaratne said. Construction Expo is being organized for the sixth consecutive year.

The construction sector is picking up at present after going through a bad period.

This major event will promote and disseminate new trends and technological developments in the sector, he said.

There is a positive trend regarding the construction industry where demand for green building certification increasing. Innovation and a green and sustainable construction industry, will improve resources efficiency, he said.

The event is endorsed by the construction fraternity as the premier construction and building materials exhibition to be staged in Sri Lanka.

“We are expecting 15,000-20,000 visitors this year which would benefit all stakeholders including contractors, architects, quantity surveyors, engineers and other related parties in the sector,” he said.

Dr. Karunaratne said that apart from local construction sector stakeholders, they are also expecting foreigners as well to setup stalls like in previous years, and will be one of the striking features of the event. Construction industry specialists from China, Singapore, Malaysia, UK and Japan will be exhibiting their latest products and technologies as well, he said. Exhibitors have found the exhibition to be the most potent and comprehensive platform to meet new customers and network, Dr. Karunaratne said.

“This year, Construction Expo 2017, will feature numerous concurrent and new events to supplement the main exhibition,” CEO, Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (LECS), Aasim Mukthar said.
