SLT to power Lanka Government Network

20 November, 2016

Sri Lanka Telecom has been chosen as the total communication service provider and communication infrastructure provider to the Lanka Government Network by the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA).

The Lanka Government Network (LGN) is a strategic project to unify and upgrade government establishments by using a single network.

Group Chief Executive Officer of SLT, Dileepa Wijesundera said, “The Local Government Network integrates all the government establishments in the country so that they can enjoy effective communications. The current network required major upgrade to cater to future initiatives, so the government and ICTA decided that an upgrade was a real necessity.”

“They decided to award the project to Sri Lanka Telecom as SLT is the only licence holder in the country able to deal with fibre optic solutions as well as the national backbone network,” he said. “We have to come up with a working model and the Cabinet of Ministers have seen it fit to grant us permission to collaborate with suitable partners so that the project can be executed effectively,” Wijesundera said.

“We have had meetings with the ministry and ICTA officials to discuss the way forward and over the next few weeks we will see the plans coming out. SLT has already set up an LGN fibre optic network covering 315 government establishments and today we have given the government a commitment that we will provide a quality product with a speed of up to 100 megabits per second, reliable internet connections, Wi-Fi and more efficient operating systems,” he said.

SLT has appointed two teams to work on the project named LGN 2.0 and initial work is expected to be completed within three months. One team will be responsible for planning the implementation of the project and will be led by the Group Chief Planning Officer, Mahinda Herath, the other team will be led by the Chief Network Officer, Priyantha Fernandez with the Chief Enterprise and Wholesale Officer, Kiththi Perera and will be responsible for the implementation and delivery.
