
The novel Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore is a love story which revolves around the lives of the two main characters John Ridd and Lorna Doone. John is from a poor family but he is a good man. Lorna is from a wealthy family, but she is unhappy because she does not receive love from her family. John and Lorna feel drawn to each other from the first time they meet by the river. As the novel progresses, Lorna and John have to overcome many obstacles because the Doones and Ridds are enemies. John's father was killed by Carver Doone who is the villain in the novel. John vows to take revenge for his father's death. The plot becomes complicated as a triangular relationship is formed when Carver declares his love for Lorna, and tries to force her into marrying him.
The novel takes the reader on a journey to rural England in the late 17th century. It tells a poignant story of the way in which unconditional love overcomes all barriers. It is also a story about the triumph of good over evil.
