The mouse deer and the tiger

9 October, 2022

Once upon a time there was a little mouse deer in a forest in Indonesia. He was a small creature. But he was not afraid of bigger animals. He was smart enough to be cunning and escape from his predators.

The tiger

One day, a tiger was hungry and was looking for food. He saw the mouse deer. It was a mouth- watering lunch for the tiger. He ducked to the ground, crawled and slowly approached the mouse deer. The tiger jumped on the mouse deer and caught him. “Yum..Yummmm! Little mouse deer, you will be my lunch today”, he said.

Buffalo dung

The mouse deer was afraid of the tiger. He saw the danger. But the mouse deer pretended to be calm. He looked around and saw some buffalo dung. The clever mouse deer said, “Wait! I don’t mind if you have me for your lunch. It is an honour for me. But I am on duty. The king wanted me to guard his cake”.

The mouse deer showed the buffalo dung to the tiger.

“Cake”? the tiger was surprised. “Can I taste it”?

“No. You can’t. The king will be angry with me”, the mouse deer said.

“But one little bite please. The king would not know,” the tiger begged.

The mouse deer pretended to be thinking but he had a plan on his mind. “Alright, tiger. But, let me run far away. Then you can eat as much as you like. I will hide before the king’s men turn up”, the mouse deer proposed. The tiger agreed. The mouse deer ran away as fast as he could.

The greedy tiger turned to the ‘cake’ and ate a big piece in one mouthful. “Ohak”. The tiger threw up. “This is not cake. It is buffalo dung” he said angrily and ran across the jungle until he caught the mouse deer. “Look little mouse deer. Get ready to be my lunch without wasting my time.” The tiger roared with anger.

A wasps’ nest

“Wait! I was caught by the king’s men and they ordered me to guard the king’s drum. It’s beat is the best music in the world.” The mouse deer showed a wasps’ nest. “I feel royal. Can I play it?” the tiger asked eagerly.

“Alright. But let me be away from this place. Otherwise, the king will be angry with me. Don’t start slowly. Just try beating it with all your four legs” The clever mouse deer advised the tiger thus and started running to ‘be away from the place’ as fast as he could.

The tiger jumped onto the wasps’ nest at once, expecting to hear a melodious drum beat. Instead, the wasps started to sting him. They stung his back. He couldn’t scratch. They started flying around the tiger’s ears and nose. He felt ticklish. They stung his legs. The tiger started running faster than the wasps could fly.

He saw the mouse deer napping under a tree. He jumped on the mouse deer and screamed “Be my lunch now!”.

A cobra

The mouse deer still pretended to be calm. “Wait! Give me a little time.” I will hand over the king’s belt and then I will be your lunch.” The mouse deer showed a cobra coiled under a bush.

“Can I wear it? I have the most beautiful dress in the jungle. It will match with this”. The tiger proudly showed the furry design on his coat. “It is too hot. I will wait under this tree and be ready to be your lunch. You can try it out before the king returns from a river bath.” The mouse deer agreed.

The tiger impatiently jumped on the cobra. The cobra was resting after eating many frogs from the pond and was very angry when the tiger’s jump hurt him. The cobra bit the tiger. That was the end of the tiger.

“Never give up. No matter how many times you fail. Keep trying for your survival,” the mouse deer said to himself.
