One day, I decided to go outside to enjoy the fresh air. I realised the temperature was getting warmer and the days were getting longer. I got really excited about how spring is going to come very soon. I started to jump up and down on our driveway, feeling the cool air rush by my face.
Pretty soon, the animals will be coming out and the birds will be singing their sweet melodies while sitting on the branch of a tree.
Spring is coming
I immediately rushed inside and said, “Mom” spring is coming soon, and I am really happy! Then my mom said, “I know Chamindri, we had better get ready for some adventure.” When it’s spring we can finally bring all our plants back to the verandah and we also need to start mowing our lawn. We can hang the bird feeder back and fill the bird bath with some water.
As my day progressed, I picked the book The Hobbit and spent some time reading in my bedroom, as it was still a little chilly outside. I read about how Bilbo Baggins the hobbit, saved himself from being captured by trolls. The trolls were going to roast the hobbit and the dwarfs in the fire, but the wizard Gandalf distracted them until dawn.
They were arguing and wrestling with each other and eventually, the trolls forgot about Bilbo, giving him time to free himself.
The next day, when sunlight falls, the trolls turn into stone.
Trolls and gnomes
Trolls are funny, mythical creatures that were created by casting a spell on stones in the dark. At dawn, when there is sunlight, they revert to stone. People often decorate their lawns with garden ornaments such as trolls and gnomes made of stone.
As I read my book, I had a great idea so I ran downstairs; “Mom, I have a great idea, let’s decorate our lawn with trolls this year”. Garden decor is very popular in the modern world. People bring out their garden ornaments like trolls and gnomes in the spring when the snow starts to melt. It is not only a decoration.
Many people believe that gnomes protect them from evil spirits that roam in the wild. Spring is the most wonderful time of the year when we come out and enjoy the beautiful weather that we missed during the winter months.
Birds, flowers and butterflies
I put the book aside and closed my eyes, and imagined going outside without a jacket and winter boots. The flowers bloom as they smell the morning dew. The birds visit our backyard, filling the air with their sweet voices. They enjoy the bird food we put out and play in the bird bath.
The butterflies will dance over to the flowers and drink their sweet nectar while pollinating the flowers.
A vegetable patch
In our little vegetable patch, we grow zucchini, tomato, beetroot and a few bell pepper plants. When these plants start to grow, we are very satisfied and wait for our hard work to pay off. When I come home from school, I check our vegetable patch to see when we can harvest the vegetables. I woke up from my daydream and thought “Oh, Chamindri, you have to wait for a few more weeks for this to happen.
A few hours later, the sun began to set, and darkness fell over the Winnipeg skies. I looked out of our window to see the moon reflected on the lake behind our house. It was a beautiful sight. I had my dinner, went to bed and snuggled into the soft covers of my bed. I chanted the ithi piso gatha before drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up, got out of bed, and stared out of the window to see that the snow had completely melted.
The perennial plants are slowly beginning to come out. I was ecstatic that spring had finally arrived in Winnipeg. I raced down the stairs to the kitchen, “Mom, spring is finally here.”
I was just so excited that all my imaginings yesterday about spring had finally come true.
I grabbed my sunhat and dashed outside to the garden bench, to finish reading my book.
