Also known as the ‘ Dutch Box’ the pettagama is an iconic piece of old Sinhalese furniture, which is used as a decorative piece while also doubling as a storage compartment.
Traditionally, the pettagama was put to many uses. It was used as a wooden rice box to protect paddy or rice from mice and moisture.
Generally made of ebony, the heavy pettagamas were used as treasure chests to store money and valuables. Their weight ensured that they could not be stolen easily.
The top and the corners of pettagamas are usually decorated with brass studs, while the top is attached with large, engraved brass hinges.
The pettagamas were very popular in the Dutch era.
