My country

30 January, 2022

My country is Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean.

My country is also called ‘The Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Our nearest neighbour is India.

The capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. Colombo is the commercial and administrative centre.

Sri Lanka has a population of more than 20 million people. It has a hot, wet climate. The average temperature is (centigrade) 29C.

Coconut, tea and rubber are the main crops in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is a multi-religious country. There are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers.

The national tree is the Na tree and the national flower is the ‘Blue Water Lily’ or as it is called in Sinhala Nil Manel. There are many rivers, mountains and attractive waterfalls in my country.

Sri Lankan tea is famous all over the world.

It is no wonder that tourism too has become a major foreign exchange earner.

I love my country very much.
