The longest river in Sri Lanka

7 May, 2017

The Mahaweli is the longest river in Sri Lanka. It begins its long journey from ‘Samanala Kande’. It ends its journey by flowing into the Trincomalee sea. Its whole journey covers 108 miles. Its water is colourless and pure and ideal for drinking purposes. Its smooth, golden sand is used for constructing buildings. There are different types of fish both big and small swimming freely in the river.

If you get a chance to have a boat ride through the Mahaweli river it can be so fascinating. The Mahaweli project which is famous among us is helpful to grow acres of paddy and other important crops for farmers of the area. We use its water for many purposes. The Mahaweli river is a great gift of nature.
