Art and Craft ideas for kids!

25 November, 2018

Hello kids!

Are you interested in handicraft? If so this page is for you. All art and craft lovers can have fun and spend their leisure in an interesting way. Come let’s have fun doing easy activities every weekend with crafter Maleendri Anandapiya. You can follow her on her facebook page – Lanka Eco Gallery and on Instagram through eco_gallery_lk

As Christmas is nearing, crafter Anandapiya takes us on a journey to decorate the Christmas tree. The tree was traditionally decorated with “roses made of coloured paper, apples, wafers, tinsel and sweetmeats”. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification.

Today, there is a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garlands, baubles, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star might be placed at the top of the tree to represent the Angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity. Edible items such as gingerbread, chocolates and other sweets are also popular and are tied to or hung from the tree's branches with ribbons. This year let’s use cute owls made out of toilet rolls to decorate our Christmas trees. Here we go!

A cute owl out of a toilet roll !

The things we need:-

1. An empty toilet roll.

2. Acrylic paint. (Any colour).

3. Paint brush.

4. A pencil.

5. An eraser.

6. A pair of scissors.

7. Colour board (Black, White and Red).

8. Glue.

9. A piece of string, ribbon or twine to hang.

10. Pom poms (any colour) - you can buy these at the Sarasavi Bookshop.

How to make our owl

1. Take the empty toilet roll and bend it in from either side like this.

2. Then take the Acrylic paint and paint all over it. You can use any colour for

this, I used red.

3. Now take the piece of black board and draw a wing like this, fold it in half

and cut it out, because we need two wings.

4. Take the piece of white board and draw a circle (two rupee coin size). Fold

it in half and cut it. We need two big white circles.

5. Take a piece of black board and cut out two small circles and paste

them on the big white circles.

6. Take the toilet roll and paste the two wings on either side.

7. Now take the eyes and paste them like this.

8. Take the red board and draw a tiny triangle shaped beak for our owl and

cut it out. Paste the beak in between the eyes.

9. Now decorate our cute owl with pom poms, and attach the piece of ribbon

or string on the top to hang it.
