Sigiriya is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is located in the Matale district in the Central Province. The name Sigiriya refers to a massive column of rock nearly 200m high and is the site of historical and archaeological significance. Sigiriya was chosen by King Kashyapa as his new capital. He decorated the rock fortress with colourful frescoes. It is one of the most visited historic sites in Sri Lanka.
