The maiden solo of a portraitist

A graduate from the Colombo Medical Faculty, Dr. Shanaka Kulathunga, who at present practices at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, is a soul who is on a journey of artistic expression. An artist whose special focus is on portrait painting he is now ready to unfold his first solo exhibition at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery. A past student of the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts, Shanaka received training from renowned artist Dr. Chandraguptha Thenuwara.

His accomplishments to date include the accolade in the professional category of the ‘SPECULO’ art exhibition organized by the SriLankan Airlines in 2017, and also achieves appreciations in the State Arts and Sculpture Festival this year in the portrait Category. His work has thus far been part of many group exhibitions, including, the annual Sri Lankan Art exhibition organized by the George Keyt Foundation.

Based on the themes of struggles, dreams, and emotions, Shanaka’s first solo exhibition will showcase his works which are of the medium ‘oil on canvas’, that have been inspired from people he has encountered in his day to day life. The exhibition takes place from December 8 to 10 at the Wendt’s Art Gallery, with the opening ceremony set for 5.30 pm on December 8.

A medical practitioner by profession whose artistic soul marshals his pulse and veins to give expression through portraiture by putting brush to canvas, Shanaka wishes to extend a warm invitation to all art lovers and well wishers to visit his exhibition which marks a milestone in his journey as a painter, passionately committed to his art.
