Balach and Bulethi

4 September, 2022

The land of Sangsila is in Pakistan. A clan named Bulethis lived in Sangsila. There was a brave man of the Bulethis clan. He had no sons but possessed many head of cattle. This man was named after his clan.

Footprints

Bulethi used to grow millet on his lands. One day, he noticed that half of his harvest was eaten by someone. By looking at the footprints he realised that it was cattle. He followed the footprints but he could not trace them beyond the river bank. He passed the night in the millet field. No-one came in the night. But half of the millet was eaten. As it happened the day before, no footsteps were found beyond the bank.

A herd of cows

Bulethi followed a secret practice. He lit a fire near the field. He knew that cattle will gather around the fire during the night.

Bulethi went to the millet field early morning and found a herd of nineteen cows there. He knew they had come from heaven by looking at their features.

There were nineteen cows in the herd. Bulethi brought them home. His wife’s name was Sammi. He gifted the herd to Sammi, saying: “This herd is yours. When I die, the village leader will not give you the rest of my cattle. So, please keep it”

A few years later, he moved away with the 19 cattle from heaven and started living with his best friend, Doda Gorgezh. One day, Bulethi sat down by Doda and said, “When I die, my village leader will carry off all of my cattle, but this herd is Sammi’s. So, do not then give them up to anyone. You should take care of this”.

One day, Bulethi died. Soon after the burial ceremony, the village leader demanded his cattle. Doda did what he was told to do and handed Sammi’s herd to her.

Doda is killed

A few weeks passed by. One day, a few Bulethis men appeared from nowhere and took the cattle from Doda and escaped. Doda chased them. A Bulethis man killed Doda. They ran back and killed Doda’s cousins at home too. Only one was left. He was called Balach.

Balach

Balach had no courage. He went to the shrine of Sakhi-Sarwar. He fetched water for the visitors at the shrine for three years.

One day Sakhi-Sarwar, the deity of the shrine came to him in a dream and said, “Go and fight with the Bulethis”.

Balach got up in the morning and went to the market. He bought a bow. He unstrung the bow before bed on that day. But found it strung on the following day. He knew it was done by Sakhi-Sarwar- the deity. It was a sign of the deity’s order to go and fight with the Bulethis.

A battle

Balach could think of only one person to help him. He was Nakhifo. They were half-brothers. They got together and fought a battle against the Bulethis in the Sham and Nesao plains. The Sham and Nasao plains were ruled by the Bulethis clan . It was their land. It had three districts. They were Barkhan, Syahaf, and Kahan. But Balach was able to fight against all the Bulethis men with the blessing of Sakhi-Sarwar. The Bulethis were destroyed. The 19 cattle from heaven were rescued and handed over to Sammi.

“Gifts from heaven are always blessed. You cannot steal it, ”Balach said.
