Visu the Woodsman and the old priest, a Japanese folk story retold in the Junior Observer (Sunday, August 7) by storyteller Poornima Weerasinghe fascinated little Binudi Aloysius very much and she decided to share it with her peer group and other friends and relatives of different age groups.
Binudi hails from Anuradhapura and is a Grade 3 student of Mazenod College, Anuradhapura.
The story was presented online via zoom, by Binud and the online presentation of half an hour took place at 7.30 pm on August 12.
This initiative was taken by Poornima Weerasinghe. She also said, "Reading newspapers should be encouraged among children to improve their critical thinking, analytical power and creativity.
Storytelling is a well-accepted technique to encourage children to gather knowledge. Unfortunately, in the new normal era, newspapers are used for many purposes but reading. This initiative is to make children read actively. I am glad that about 30 children from Anuradhapura, Kandy, Colombo, Kurunegala and Matara took part in this half an hour zoom program to listen to their fellow storyteller”. Poornima also said that “This tradition will continue."
