Sherlock Holmes, is an extremely insightful and confidential detective created by British writer and physician, Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1887, in the novel A Study in Scarlet which was the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Holmes’ success comes from his unnatural ability to accumulate evidence based on his sharp skills of surveying and consistent reasoning. The world’s first and only ‘Consulting Detective’ tracked criminals, throughout the South of England, Edwardian and Victorian London, and continental Europe. Dr.Joseph Bell, Conan Doyle’s professor at the University of Edinburgh medical school, moulded Holmes’s method and mannerisms. Holmes provided some intuition and techniques saying “When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains however improbable, must be the truth”
His detecting talents become comprehensible though no less brilliant when cleared by his companion, Dr. John H. Watson who recounts the criminal cases they pursued. Holmes often declines praise saying his abilities are ‘elementary’. Watson describes Holme as difficult and moody. Holmes is considerably untidy even though he has many good habits.
