My country is Sri Lanka

16 July, 2022

My country is Sri Lanka. It is an island in the Indian Ocean. There were many names used for Sri Lanka in ancient times. Taprobane, Rathna Deepa, Lanka Deepa and The Pearl of the Indian Ocean” are some of them.

Sri Lanka is a multi ethnic country. There are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers. They live very peacefully. Sri Lankans have cultural activities based on their nationality and religion. The Sinhalese use the word ayubowan to greet each other. The Tamil people use the word wanakkam and Muslims use asslam alaikum to greet each other. The Burghers use “Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Goodnight based on the time that the greeting occurs. Sri Lankans have a very attractive smile and they are very keen on hospitality.

My country is rich in natural resources such as waterfalls, botanical gardens, forests and mountains. Tourism is one source of income for Sri Lanka. Since Sri Lanka has so many beautiful places, tourists are attracted to spend their time in Sri Lanka especially during their holidays. Dunhida, Diyaliuma and Bambarakanda are beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Peradeniya and Hakgala are botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. We cannot forget about Yala, Wilpattu and Kumana wild life sanctuaries.

Sri Lanka has three types of areas based on the sea level. They are the coastal area, inner plain area and the central hills. There are no seasonal changes in Sri Lanka

But the coastal area has hot and humid weather. We can always feel the hot weather in the inner plain area. But in the central hills the temperature is always cool and humid.

The rain occurs throughout the year in Sri Lanka, but monsoon rain is seasonal and will help mainly the paddy cultivation. Sri Lankans’ staple food is rice and curry. The country is very famous to for spicy food from ancient times .

Sri Lankans are very clever. Their skills can be seen in the historical cities in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is a of the world heritage site.

Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Yapahuwa and Kurunegala are some of the ancient kingdoms in Sri Lanka.

We are proud about all these historical places as their architecture is amazing.

I really love my country since it is the place where we can do everything peacefully. I am determined to protect my country forever.

I love my country very much.
