Ceylon tea is one of the most popular and tasty brands of tea among many consumers around the world. Most prefer instant tea and also black and green tea.
In 1867, an Englishman named James Taylor started the first tea estate in Loolcandura Estate, Hewaheta in Kandy.
Tea grows well in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Badulla, Ratnapura, Kegalle and Matale districts. Tea plants need a lower temperature, a considerable rainfall, sloping lands and laterite soil. The Tea Research Centre is situated in Talawakale. It introduces and provides new methods of tea plucking, new categories of tea plants and new tea cordials and wines. In the beginning, Sri Lanka was able to export only a small quantity of tea to other countries. But in 1997, as the tea production increased and a huge income was added to the country’s economy by exporting good quality tea. Now, new machines have been introduced to produce the world’s best tea.
The Sri Lankan tea estates provide some of the best tea to the world.
