Kaluva goes to Marapona

5 June, 2022

Kaluva had been Ralahany’s faithful servant for many years. Ralahamy had brought Kaluva from a remote village in the Vanni. At the time, he was only five-years old. Kaluva used to run errands and do all kinds of household work. Although Ralahamy did not pay him anything at the end of the month, he was given food and clothes.

A journey to Marapona

One day Ralahamy called Kaluva and told him that he would have to go to Marapona on the following day. Kaluva knew that it would be a long and tiresome journey.

He asked Emalina who worked in the kitchen to prepare a bathmula (a packet of rice and curry) early in the morning. He also filled his labukete (a dried gourd prepared to carry water) with water.

Big Bear

Having prepared everything Kaluva went to bed. Soon he fell asleep and started dreaming. He saw Big Bear chasing Ralahamy in a forest. Kaluva ran after Big Bear and asked him why he was chasing his master.

“He has killed my son and I’m going to teach him a good lesson,” said Big Bear.

“He is not the one who killed your son,” said Kaluva.

“Then who killed him?”

Kotirala

“Your son was killed by Kotirala. I saw him dragging your son towards Marapona, said Kaluva.

“Then I too must go to Marapona to save my son. Will you come with me?” asked Big Bear. Before he could answer Big Bear, Kaluva heard birds chirping.

He knew it was morning.

He ran to the kitchen and collected the bathmula and the labukete and set off towards Marapona.

After walking many miles, he reached Marapona and had his meal.

Then he looked for Big Bear who promised to come there to save his son from Kotirala

Kaluva returns home

Finding none of them at Marapona, Kaluva returned home after several hours. He saw Ralahamy pacing up and down in the corridor.

When he saw Kaluva he sprang on him and asked what happened to him.

“I went to Marapona early in the morning. You asked me to do so yesterday,” he said meekly.

“Yes, I asked you to go to Marapona. But you should have found out the reason for going there”, Ralahamy thundered.

“I had a reason to go there, Ralahamy.”

“What’s that?”

I saw Big Bear chasing you in a dream and you were going towards Marapona.”

Ralahamy burst into a loud laughter and Kaluva ran into the kitchen.
