My town is Mawatagama. It is in the Kurunegala district and is only 12 kilometres away from Kurunegala town towards the South.
It is a beautiful town with trees encircling it and peace and calmness pervade the town throughout the day and night.
Yet this town turns out to be very busy on Sundays because of a ‘Fair’. Vegetables, groceries, hardware, spices and condiments are brought and sold at this fair.
The buying and selling reaches a climax by noon and the amount of money spent by customers remains incalculable.
According to the topographical analysis of the town, the right side of the town is more close to the end of the town on the northern side.
The town has a large green playground with a big pavilion.
This pavilion attracts large crowds of spectators. Games such as football, rugby and cricket are often played on this green.
The right side of the town also has several pharmacies which dispense the latest Western medicines. There are a few excellent hotels designed to attract the tourists, while the rest of the shops are smaller and they are patronised by local customers.
The land on the left side of the public road which runs through the town, is marked with the paraphernalia of a Buddhist temple of long-standing. The temple has been named as the Ranasingharamaya. The Viharadhipathi of this temple is highly respected in the area.
Next to the temple but a short distance away from it, are many residences of Ayurvedic doctors, who specialise in the treatment of diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis.
A little father away from these houses and further to the North, one would come across several residences of teachers. Amid these residences are a few astrologers who will read your horoscope and predict your future.
Thus, amid a great struggle for a better life, a calm and peaceful atmosphere prevail in my town of Mawatagama.
Therefore, I love my town very much.
