The environment is the surroundings in which plants and animals live, grow and produce new plants and animals. Plants and animals are called living beings or organisms.
The environment is a habitat for millions and billions of organisms. Life can be found on both land and water bodies such as rainforests, deserts, polar regions and oceans.
There are micro-organisms as well as macro-organisms in the environment. Plants can be categorised as trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and creepers. Green plants produce food by the process of photosynthesis.
Animals are categorised as herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. All animals directly or indirectly depend on food produced by plants.
There are some amazing adaptations in the plant and animal worlds. Some animals hibernate and migrate. They also have protective behaviour such as camouflage. Some carnivorous plants consume insects since they need nutrients for their growth such as nepenthes.
Certain animals went extinct due to natural disasters, over killing and habitat loss. They are dinosaurs and dodos. Also some animals became endangered because of over killing and habitat loss. Some of them are the Amur leopard, Scarlet macaw, Malayan tapir and the Sumatran orangutan. As the future generation, it is our responsibility and duty to protect the environment.
