Walt Disney became famous after he created the cartoon character ‘Mickey Mouse’. From then on Disney never looked back. He founded his own studio and established many theme parks Even though Disney is no more the brand name Disney is ranked at the very top in the movie industry.

Many movies have been made based on fairy tales and they were given new twists by Disney. Today, Elmira Perera talks about the legendary and delightful friends who form the world of Disney.

 

Cinderella  (from Cinderella)

After the death of her mother, Cinderella’s father remarried, believing that she ‘needed a mother’s care’. He died shortly thereafter, upon which she was forced to work as a scullery maid for her wicked stepmother, Lady Tremaine and two stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. Despite the cruelty of her jealous stepfamily, Cinderella remained kind, spirited, and internally beautiful. On the night of the Royal ball, her Fairy Godmother appears, providing Cinderella with a beautiful dress, and a carriage to go to the ball.

Running away from the ball at midnight, she loses one of her glass slippers.

The prince goes round the kingdom seeking the wearer of the slipper, vowing to marry her – and finally finds Cinderella – and they both get their wish.

Rapunzel (From Tangled)

 

She is the long-lost princess of the kingdom of Corona, known for her long, magical, golden hair.

As a child, Rapunzel was abducted by a wicked witch and locked away in an isolated tower for eighteen years—during which, she became fascinated with a phenomenon involving the ’floating lights‘ that would only appear on her birthday.

With the help of the thief, Flynn Rider who stumbles on Rapunzel’s tower, she escaped to learn more about the lights and pursue her dream of exploring the outside world. Finally, Rapunzel is reunited with her parents.

 

 

Merida (From Brave)

She is a Scottish princess from the kingdom of  DunBroch, the sister of Harries, Hubert and Hamish as well as the daughter of Queen Elinor and King Fergus. Self-willed and fearless, Merida challenges her kingdom’s long standing traditions to live a life of independence.

 

 

 

Snow White (From Snow White)

She is a young princess; the ‘Fairest One of All’, whose beauty is defined by her inherent kindness. One day, Snow White learns that her jealous stepmother, the Evil queen, is determined to kill her.

Snow White runs away from home to escape the queen’s wrath, and finds shelter in the cottage of the seven dwarfs – Grumpy, Dopey, Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy and Sleepy. They take her in when they discover the reason why Snow White ran away.

However, when the queen finds out that the huntsman who was supposed to kill her, didn’t do so, she disguises herself as an old woman, carrying with her a poison apple for Snow White.

The girl, drops down dead, after a bite of the apple and leaves the dwarfs in sorrow and with the hope of her Prince bringing her back to life.

Ariel (From The Little Mermaid)

She is the seventh and youngest daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena, rulers of the undersea kingdom of Atlantica.

She’s very passionate about going up to the surface and meeting humans, but is prohibited to do so by King Triton.

One day, she bargains with an evil sea witch – in return for her lovely voice, she would be given a pair of legs to explore the surface.

She meets Prince Eric and after defeating Ursula, who disguises herself as the princess he was going to marry, they live happily ever after.

 

Moana (From Moana)

Born on the island village of Motunui, Moana is the daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, with an inherited love for the seas as well as voyaging.

She dreams about exploring the world and sailing across the seas but she is forbidden to bring her dream to reality by her father.

When her island becomes endangered by a life-killing darkness, Moana is chosen by the ocean to journey across the sea and save the world by restoring the heart of Te Fiti-with the aid of the shape-shifting demigod, Maui.

 

 

Belle (From Beauty and the Beast)

She is the only daughter of Maurice, an inventor with whom she resides in a small, French village.

Belle’s passion for fantastical stories, along with her outcast status, left her yearning for a life of adventure outside her small village.

She unexpectedly gets her wish when she becomes the Beast’s prisoner in order to save her father’s life. Without knowing it, she grows to love the Beast and breaks the spell cast on him – he turns into a prince!
