
What is a lantern and how is it created?
A lantern is a structure made by a 3D polygon. The structure is also created by 45 thin wooden sticks and they are hand tied together and on top of it oil paper is pasted in designs making the lantern very colorful. and astonishing looks.
These lanterns are only created on t Vesak Ppya day.
What does the lantern represent on Vesak day?
During Vesak Buddhists remember the birth, Enlightenment and the passing away Parinibbana of the Buddha. Colourful lanterns and lights are a homage to the Buddha who illuminated the world by teaching the Noble Truths to attain Enlightenment.
Buddhists visit temples wearing white clothes and some people also observe sil and listen to dhamma preaching by bhikkhus.
What are the special events which take place?
On this day almost the whole country is decorated. It is decorated with thoran or pandals with bright lights and lanterns. Dansals are held in public places and anyone can get free food or drinks depending on what is given.
Vesak is celebrated each year in May.
