
The first jet engines were built in 1930 by Hans Von Ohain in Germany and Frank Whittle in Britain though neither knew each other’s work. The first controlled, powered flight was made by an American, Orville Wright in 1903. The world’s first airport was built at College Park in Maryland, USA in 1909. Many early airports such as those in Berlin, Jakarta and Dallas were social centres, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Only powerful rockets can give the thrust to overcome gravity and launch spacecraft into space. The world’s largest airport is the King Fahd in Saudi Arabia. It covers 780 Sq Km.
