Question 1:- Rusting of iron lying at the

bottom of deep rivers and lakes is much slow er than when the iron is at the soil surface. Why?

 

Answer:- Two prime factors needed for iron to rust are moisture and oxygen. Oxygen content in air is about 20 %. This along with the moisture in the atmosphere, can easily cause rusting of iron. Solubility of oxygen in water, is somewhat low. Also, this solubility decreases as the depth of water increases. So, deep down, the very low oxygen concentration is not sufficient for the iron to rust. Then as depth of water increases, the rusting process gets slower.
