Vesak is celebrated in Sri Lanka as well as in ther Buddhist countries around the world. It is celebrated in May. Vesak signifies the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and the passing away (Parinibbana). This day is a very important day for Buddhists. On this day, the Buddha's teaching is preached in all the temples. Most of the Buddhists observe sil on this day. On Vesak day, all the roads and homes are lit with lanterns. Some organise dansals such as ice cream, drinks and rice and curry.
