Sri Lanka is a tropical country. The tropical forest - Sinharaja is world famous and a national heritage site. The forests in Sri Lanka are found both in the dry zone and wet zone. Forests are important because they help to maintain regular rainfall. They also provide wood for fuel purposes. Furthermore, forests are the natural habitats for wildlife and a variety of rare endemic flora and fauna.
But today selfish people destroy forests in many ways. They cut down trees illegally for timber, agriculture and chena cultivation. Governments also carry out unplanned deforestation for development and housing purposes. We can see the negative results of this in landslides, floods, irregular rainfall and drought due to climate change. It is our duty to protect forests. Can you imagine a world without trees?
