Prasad Abu Bakr who has made his name among the local art scene in a big way in recent times has been showing his work at the foyer of the Fortaleza Hotel, Church Cross Street inside the Galle Fort since last December and has now shifted his collection to No.5, Middle Street, Fort. The decision to continue with the exhibition all through the month of February too, was made taking into consideration the keen interest shown and the favourable remarks made by many foreign tourists visiting the exhibition.
Prasad Abu Bakr, a notable journalist over the years has made his appearance as an artist in many exhibitions in the recent past to the surprise of many art lovers and critics, alike.
However, Prasad’s recent appearance as an artist is no surprise to many of his close friends. “He has been painting for years – we are only surprised that he has emerged largely with his art only since recently” said many of them. Prasad has been at many exhibitions, both as a painter and also as a photographer – treating each of those passions as two different artistic entities. But since recently, whis work has been a combination of both these techniques, merged together, resulting in a bigger and better creative exercise – according to Prasad.
A student of Mrs. Cora Abraham – whose motto was ‘education through art’ and who had her own art school called Melbourne Art Classes during the early ’70s– now better known as the Cora Abraham Art Classes, since her demise.
Prasad’s recent work has taken a turn towards mixing both, his passion towards photography and painting and moulding them in fusion to produce a series of unusual imagery that has won the hearts of many art lovers and critics alike – The present exhibition of his at No.5, Middle Street, Galle Fort too depicts this novel approach created by this journalist cum artist, appreciated and enjoyed by many art lovers and collectors alike.
