Sigiriya

5 November, 2017

The ancient city of Sigiriya is in the Matale district. It was built by King Kashyapa as his new capital. It is a rock fortress which is 200 metres high. King Kashyapa had built a beautiful staircase and a mirror wall inside the fortress. The graffiti on the walls mention the names of 500 ladies. The Sri Lankan archaeologist Dr. Senarath Paranavithana has deciphered 685 verses which were found inside the fortress. The royal palace was abandoned after King Kashyapa’s death. It was then used as a Buddhist monastery for some time. Sigiriya is now listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
