1 October, 2017

Devanampiyatissa became king after his father Mutasiva. King Devanampiyatissa had a good friend in India. He was King Asoka. Even though they had not met each other, they had been exchanging gifts and messages through their envoys. Son of King Asoka, Arhat Mahinda came to Sri Lanka. King Devanampiyatissa who was deer hunting, saw Arahat Mahinda on top of the Mihintale rock. King Devanampiyatissa listened to Arahat Mahinda’s sermon and soon embraced Buddhism. The king thereafter engaged in religious activities. King Devanampiyatissa built the Tissa Wewa to provide water for agriculture. This tank covers an area of more than 400 acres.
