Kalabhushana R.S. Karunaratne who has an abiding passion for English Literature, Western Classical Culture, Philosophy and Psychology has published yet another masterpiece in his latest book titled Flashes of Inspiration.

It is manifestly clear that he has been encouraged to publish Flashes of Inspiration, following the huge sales of his earlier editions Vignettes on Life and Vignettes of Life, which were regularly published in the Sunday Observer and Ceylon Today.

In this day and age, when many authors prefer to write novels, short stories and poetry; hardly anybody writes essays as most publishers do not realize its intrinsic value as a literary tool and feel that essays are generally written by students in a classroom.

To say the least, the essays in this collection would undoubtedly stimulate a keen interest in this literary genre.

Karunaratne goes on to say that in this literary age, literature has an impact on the popular mind. It upholds truth, renews our ideas about the world, comforts us, and what is more, at times alarms us in many ways.

To cap it all, as he puts it eloquently, you can soar by means of other people.

“If you have a soaring spirit, you too can inspire others”.

This book is ideal as a guide for students and teachers alike for its simplicity to inspire others. It has tremendous appeal and fills a void which few authors would dare to venture.

Karunaratne, who holds a Bachelor’s Special Degree in Mass Communication and a Diploma in Psychology served as a Visiting Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Kelaniya, a Visiting Lecturer in English at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the London Business School, Colombo and the Institute of Bankers, Sri Lanka.

He also serves as a Visiting Lecturer in Journalism at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7. - Dudley Jansz
