The novel The Vendor of Sweets was written by R.K. Narayan. It was first published in 1967 by Viking. The main characters are Jagan, Mali and the cousin. The novel is based on the life of a sweet vendor named Jagan. In the novel The Vendor of Sweets, the plot is organized to display the conflict between Jagan and his son Mali. It appears that Mali always acts against the wishes of his father. Jagan is a widower but he is highly interested in his son. In the flow of the plot, this conflict goes on and finally Jagan decides to withdraw from the home environment. Generation gap, tradition and modernity, appearance and reality and human relations are the main themes in the novel. I love this book very much because the writer presents humour, sarcasm and irony in the novel.
