Poson Festival

2 July, 2017

The Poson Festival is celebrated in Sri Lanka on the full moon Poya Day in June. Poson Poya celebrates the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Thera at Mihintale and the introduction of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Poson Poya is celebrated annually throughout the island, but particularly in Mihintale where Mahinda Thera first set foot to preach the teachings of the Buddha to King Devanampiyatissa who was ruling at that time.

In addition to customary Poya Day rituals many other religious activities are organised during the Poson period such as pandals, dansals and Bhakthi Gee. Streets, homes and public places are decorated with beautiful handmade paper lanterns.
