The world’s first postage stamp was introduced by Sir Rowland Hill in May 1840. It depicts the head of Queen Victoria in Black and had a value of one penny, but did not carry the name of the country. The first postage stamp in Sri Lanka was issued on 1st of April 1857. It also showed the head of Queen Victoria. This stamp was printed in light brown and purple on a special type of paper which was light blue in colour. The value was six pence. After this stamp, six other postage stamps were released in 1875. All these stamps carry the portrait of Queen Victoria.
