
Ayumi Dissanayake, a student of Leeds International School, Matara has excelled in the field of karate.
Karate is a martial art developed in Okinawa, Japan. Ayumi said, “I selected Karate because I want to go forward until I get my ‘Black belt’. I have won many achievements in Karate.”
Her achievements are Shortokan Karate do federation Southern Province Champion 9/8/7 Kyu, Under 9 female Kata event, ISKF/AJSIKS National Karate Championship 2016 kata 1st, Kumite 1st, Karate do Championship 2016 Matara district Kata 1st, Karate do Championship 2016 Southern Province Kata 1st, National Karate Championship 2016 Kata best performance, 21st Kensho International Open Karate do Championship 2016 Kata 1st and special award, International School Karate Championship 2016 Kumite 1st, Nihon Shito-Ryu International Open Championship, 2016 Kata 1st, Kumite 1st and team Kata 2nd and 8th Karate Cup 2017, Silent Knight, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Under 9 KATA (silver medal) and 4th PLACE KUMITE.
“My ambition is to become an Excel Pilot. I am the School Junior Western Band leader and a committee member of the School Literary Association. I am a member of the Drama Club and the Under 9 athletic champion of the 2017 school sports meets and also the Under 9 swimming champion. My parents, School Principal, Deputy Principal, the School staff members and my classmates help me a lot to achieve my ambition,” Ayumi said.
She further said that her favourite leisure time activity is collecting stamps and reading novels such as ‘Secret Kingdom,’ ‘Rainbow Fairies’ and ‘Roald Dahl books'. “I also read the Sunday Observer newspaper and the Junior Observer magazine,” she said.
