Thai Pongal is a Hindu harvest festival. Pongal is celebrated from January 13 to 16 in India, but in Sri Lanka and in a few countries it is celebrated for two days. Most urban people celebrate the second day as the main festival because they pay respect to the cows and decorate them in a special way and feed them pongal rice. Hindus celebrate Thai Pongal to thank Sun god or Surya Bagavan because when farmers grow crops, the sun helps them a lot.
