The Royal Botanic Garden

1 January, 2017

The Royal Botanic Gardens is situated in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. In 1371, King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court in Peradeniya near Mahaweli Ganga. During the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe from 1747 to 1780, it was made a royal garden, and from 1780 to 1798 King Rajadhi Rajasinghe resided there and a temporary residence was constructed for him. The famous historical battle of Gonnoruwa between King Rajasinghe II and the Portugese was fought on the Northern side of the Mahaweli river.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is famous for the Orchard Garden, Fernery, Great Lawn, Palm Avenue, Spice Garden, Plant House, and the Lake. There is a flowering tree which Queen Victoria planted. A Sal tree from India where the Lord Buddha was born is also grown in the Garden. I love the Botanic Gardens.
