Lightning has been analysed by experiments as an electrical current connecting the sky with the Earth. This electrical current flows from charged clouds to the Earth. If such a current is to flow from the clouds to the Earth, electricity must originate in the clouds. Clouds are formed from very small drops of water. These clouds gradually grow and expand vertically into an umbrella shape. The air particles, as they travel through the cloud, rub against the water drops which then get charged with electricity.
