The English Debating Team of Ananda College emerged Champions at the 18th Sri Lanka Schools’ English Debating Championship, organised by the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. The tournament is considered to be the pinnacle of the local English debating scene. Fifty four teams from all over the island took part in this year’s championship.
The champion team comprised Thishya Mendis, (Captain) Cheka Mendis (Vice Captain) Mevindu Asuramanna and Yasindu Edussuriya.
The final was held at the auditorium of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo recently. Ananda College became champions of the same tournament in 2016,2017 and 2020.
Two teams: A and B participated from Ananda College at this year’s competition.
Ananda A won five preliminary rounds and qualified for the finals and won each round at separate -finals. Ananda team emerged victorious against Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo in Finals, Trinity College Kandy in Quarter Finals, Royal College, Colombo in the Semifinals and proceeded to win the championship after a thrilling final with Wesley College, Colombo.
Judges of the competition comprised the members of the Moot Court and Debating Society of the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo, Debaters Council of Sri Lanka including Lawyers and other professionals.
The Sinhala Medium Champions were Royal College Colombo while Tamil Medium Champions were S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia.
