Astro Night: a peep into the cosmos

25 June, 2023

Seylan Tikiri, the Children’s Savings brand, partnered with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) to orchestrate an engaging and educational event called ‘Astro Night.’ The initiative, held at the CR and FC Grounds in Colombo recently, aimed to deepen the connection between children and nature by exploring the mysteries of the night sky.

As the official Banking Partner of the Wild Kids project, Seylan Bank and WNPS demonstrated their shared commitment to empowering children through hands-on experience based education flatform.

Immersed in a captivating atmosphere from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, 125 Wild Kids had the opportunity to delve into the wonders of the cosmos. Members of the Astronomical Society of Colombo University, who also joined hands in support of this initiative, guided the children through a series of interactive sessions and observation activities, making it an unforgettable experience.

The night’s activities were thoughtfully designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of astronomy. The children were introduced to the fundamentals of astronomy, followed by a fascinating demonstration showcasing the functioning of telescopes.

A planetarium session allowed them to observe celestial objects and engage in an interactive question-and-answer session. An intriguing presentation on topics such as extraterrestrial life, ufology, the solar system, and the moon expanded their knowledge. The event concluded with an inspiring stargazing experience, accompanied by an engaging discussion on identifying constellations.

The success of Astro Night was evident from the overwhelming response received from parents and children who attended the event. In an era dominated by digital experiences, Astro Night provided a platform for children to break away from screens and connect with the wonders of the natural world. Due to the tremendous feedback received, Seylan Tikiri and WNPS anticipate organising more highly engaging and educational events for children in the future.
