Grand show by Central Province schoolboys at rugby Sevens

The Central Province Rugby Referees Society (CPRS) held a rugby Sevens tournament for schools and12 teams competed against one another at the Trinity College rugby ground at Pallekelle.

It marked the first time that an Under-18 boys Sevens was conducted by the CPRS and the tournament offered a chance for players to be identified for future develop as far as skill, speed and strength were concerned.

Some good rugby was witnessed and Kingswood College led by Randila Ranaweera did their best to beat Trinity College led by Athab Manzil by 14 points to 7 in the Cup final. At half time the scores read 7-7.

The players who did well and scored tries for the winners were Anuda Sikurajapathi and Imanka Ishara and the goal kicking was done by Imanka Ishara.

For the Trinitians it was Chamendra Danapala who scored the try while Anovas Kodithuwakku did the goal kicking.

In the semi finals Kingswood beat St. Anthony’s College 14-12 while Trinity beat Dharmaraja College 26-19.

St. Anthony’s presented a good display of rugby to win the Plate championship and Vidyartha College with a talented side won the Bowl championship.

St. Sylvester’s College and Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College did not take part.

Sri Rahula College, Sarasavi Uyana MV, Chandrananda MV, Madena Central, St. Thomas’ College, Matale and Nugawela Central were some of the other teams that took part.
