A true beauty queen today is believed to be more like a myth than a reality. In a commercialised industry, where the values of beauty contests, once regarded as a vital means of social change have all been lost due to fraudulent acts of the parties involved in conducting such pageants in Sri Lanka.
In the face of such reality, we are happy and proud to see our current Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World 2022, Pushpika De Silva embarking on her campaign “Lend a Helping Hand”.
According to Pushpika De Silva, to reach out to fellow brothers and sisters in the country is her main goal for the period of her reign and thereafter. “I am determined to give back to mother Lanka in every possible way. To me, religion, creed, race, ethnicity are all socially constructed boundaries we have made for our benefit and in doing so, we willingly curtail the freedom, happiness and the right to coexist in harmony. I am a strong believer of humanity, humility and harmony.” Pushpika said.
Sharing her thoughts about her campaign, Pushpika highlighted about her latest project that took her to Vavuniya. “As I said before, for me what matters is that all humans live in peace, harmony and in good health. I embarked on this project as I was able to reach out to a Tamil community near the Madhu Church.”
With the help of Manager of Hotel Palmyrah Garden Madhu, Kasun Kanishka and the OIC of the Madhu Church Police, Pushpika identified 50 families that needed assistance. Each family was gifted a five kilogram pack of rice and a donation of money to buy provisions.
“This was a soul satisfying journey for me and my son and the friends who are always with me on this endeavour. Though our travel was long, at the end of the day, seeing a smile on the face of those innocent families gave me the strength to believe further on my capability,” said Pushpika.
