Sean Wijesinghe to continue
Sean Wijesinghe will continue to coach Kandy SC for the fourth year. They will play their first match of the new rugby season on November 11.
He is one of the best, balanced and knowledgeable coaches. He was also a fine basketball player and athlete at school and won colours in rugby and basketball. He has been with the Nittawela club for 18 years as a player, captain and now as a coach.
Pooranawatha Dynamic SC cricket
The Pooranawatha Dynamic Sports Club cricket tournament will be conducted on September 8 with 25 teams in action at Police ground.
There will be trophies for the winners and runners-up, best batsmen, bowler, fielder, man of the final and man of the tournament. Further details could be obtained by calling Azari on 0777298799.
Trinity begins cricket preparations
Preparation has begun for the fast approaching 2018/19 cricket season at Trinity College which will be fielding a talented and experienced side with several of last season’s players.
This is one school which enjoys all the facilities for the sport with indoor nets, bowling machine and a stadium.
Kavinda Jayasuriya is the head coach, Navin Ekanayake fielding coach and Rushan Jaleel the head of cricket strategic planning and development while the MIC is the experienced Dammika Kulatunge. The team has the fullest backing from the principal Andrew Fowler-Watt and the vice principal J.A. Shaw Wilson a former coach.
Mahesh helps stumpers
Mahesh Gunatilleke the former St. Anthony’s College and Sri Lanka wicket-keeper came out with a good programme for young schoolboy wicket keepers at Kingwood College at the Randles Hill ground where some of the top schoolboy wicket keepers were present.
The project was initiated by the Chairman of the Coaching Committee of the Kandy District Cricket Association Malcom Perera.
KDCA Mercantile Sixes
The Kandy District Cricket Association for the first time have come out with a Mercantile Sixes tournament which will be held on September 15 at Police ground. Fourteen teams will be in action.
Malcolm Perera the Organising Committee chairman said the tournament was being planned as one second to none and the winners will be entitled to trophies and prize money.
Viper to coach Army
Kandy’s Nihal (Viper) Gunaratne has taken over as the head coach of the Army rugby team. He is an IRB World Rugby Level 3 qualified coach. Last season’s Army coach was another Kandy product Nilfer Ibrahim.
Rotary cricket Sixes
The Kandy Rotary Club’s Sixes cricket tournament will be held on September 8 at Digana.
The winning team and runners-up will go home with the TRR Rajan Memorial Trophy. This event is once again sponsored by Asoka Group of Companies.
At this event Rotarians are to attract members from all over the country. Over 30 teams from Rotary and Rotract will be seen in action. The late TRR Rajan was the 51st president of the Rotary Club of Kandy.
