Peterite merry-go-round at Maradana

16 July, 2023

St. Peter’s College ran circles around Zahira College on their home ground at Maradana moving into and invading every bit of space available to score as many as nine tries in a 56-7 win at their Dialog trophy inter-school league rugby match yesterday.

The Peterites could have scored more tries had they controlled their running and passing frenzy as they dropped the ball twice after crossing the line in the second half.

Zahira trailed 0-15 in the first half but the second half put them in total disarray as the Peterites found their feet to devastate the home team with seven more tries.

The Peterites just kept running through the Zahira defence almost every time they had the ball and their second half replacement scrum-half Praneeth Silva sent out a message that he’ll get down to business any time as he crossed the line three times for tries with his sizzling runs that foxed the Zahira defence.

Another Peterite player Zahira found hard to contain was centre Pasindu Bandara who opened the try scoring in the third minute of play to do it once again in the second half.

Sadav Gamage, Vishmika Mithusara, Aiden Fernando and the trend-setting play-maker Sudesh Jayawickrema were the other try scorers while Rahul Denish and Emith Jayaweera shared the goal-kicking duties in converting four of the tries.

Zahira’s only try after conceding a 41-0 lead came in the closing stages when Sabri Sahibo touched down.
