Ms. Nada Al Nasheef, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the United Nations Human Rights Council is ready to provide support to the government and people of Sri Lanka to promote reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka yesterday (21 June) at the 6th Meeting of the 53rd Regular Session of UNHRC.

The Deputy High Commissioner made this statement while providing an oral update on progress in reconciliation and accountability, and on the impact of the economic crisis and corruption on human rights.

She said the economic crisis has had a severe impact on the rights and well-being of many Sri Lankans.

Also, the Deputy High Commissioner commended Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on the discussions he has started with the Tamil political parties and the decision to stop the acquisition of land for archaic forestry or security purposes.

She also pointed out that the government should take steps to replace Sri Lanka's Prevention of Terrorism Act in accordance with international standards
