The Government will present a Bill in Parliament soon to prevent organisations and NGOs presenting national level awards and titles in an irregular manner.
The Cabinet has already given its approval to present a Bill in Parliament in this connection, said Kurunegala District Senior Divisional Secretary R.M. Jayaratne.
He was speaking at a recent meeting of artistes of the North Western Province.
He said that the Cabinet had told the President that the national awards presented by the Government have been undermined as a result of the indiscriminate presentation of awards by various NGOs at present.
Hence, the Government will present a Bill in Parliament to prevent the presentation of such national awards by various NGOs and private organisations in an ad hoc manner.
He said at present the titles presented by the Government have been belittled as many NGOs also present the same national titles. Presenting National Awards in our country started in 1986 and several Government Gazette notifications have also been issued in this regard earlier, he added.
