IUSF’s Mudalige, 62 monks remanded till 27

Kaduwela Acting Magistrate Sujeewa Gunathilake yesterday ordered the remand of 62 university undergraduates including Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) Convenor Wasantha Mudalige till February 27.

These university undergraduates including Buddhist monks were arrested by Thalangama Police over eight charges including entering the Education Ministry forcibly and damaging the public properties.

They were produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate by the police yesterday.

Charges have been framed against the suspects under the Penal Code and the Public Property Act. Police informed the court that the suspects have caused damage to the value of Rs.191,000 to the Education Ministry. The suspects included 54 Buddhist monks and eight lay students. Police informed the court that the suspects are engaged in activities that hamper the day today life of the public and prayed the court to remand them.

A group of 40 lawyers including Attorney Kamal Wijesiri appeared for the suspects.
