The Elections Commission yesterday said that the Local Government Election will not be held on March 9 as scheduled and the new election date will be announced on March 3.
Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Rathnayake in a release said that the Local Government election will not be held on March 9 due to issues which are beyond the control of the Commission.
He said that the Commission will make a request to the Speaker seeking his intervention to secure necessary funds from the Treasury for the conduct of election.
The Commission is to furnish a report containing the details of the constitutional role played by the Commission to conduct the Local Government election.
